Civic Volunteer accused of slamming guardrail on students protest arrested

Date:

A Civic Volunteer attached to Kolkata Police was on Saturday arrested and “demobilised” after allegedly slamming a guardrail with his motorbike in the northern part of the city, an officer said.

The incident happened at Sinthi More on BT Road where the students of Rabindra Bharati University were protesting against the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old lady medic in the colonial era RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, official sources said.

The Civil Volunteer, identified as Gangasar Goud, allegedly hit the guardrails with his two-wheeler in a drunken state and got involved in a quarrel on Friday-Saturday midnight when the students, mostly girls, were participating in a protest alongside former students of the institution. The protesters then blocked the busy BT Road for about 4 hours from 4-30 am and lifted it only after being assured of Goud’s arrest, police said.

“Where do we all go now? When we are protesting against the crime perpetrated on a woman medic, a uniformed man in a drunken state attacking us with his motorcycle, and the accused was allowed to go by a Kolkata Police Sergeant,” a protester told reporters on Saturday. However, senior officials from the city police headquarters Lalbazar intervened and arrested the civic volunteer and demobilised him from further duty,” said a student.

control of the night while on protest. seeking justice for Abaya and the arrest of the accused of the “horrendous” rape and murder in the RG Kar Hospital on August 9. UNI PC SSP
