Delhi Mayor orders action against coaching centres

Date:

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi on Sunday ordered strict action against all coaching centres operating from basements following the death of three UPSC aspirants due to drowning in a water-flooded basement in Old Rajinder Nagar.

She directed the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to conduct a prompt investigation into this tragic incident and take strict action if any MCD officer is found guilty.

In a letter to the MCD Commissioner, Oberoi said, “Yesterday some students were trapped in a private coaching institute being run in Rajendra Nagar due to flooding, and out of them, three students lost their lives. This is very shocking; this incident needs thorough investigation and swift and strongest possible action.”

“It is also our responsibility to ensure that such an incident does not recur in any part of Delhi,” she added.

She further directed the MCD commissioner,” All such coaching centres across Delhi that are under the jurisdiction of MCD and running commercial activities in basements that are in violation of building bye-laws and are not as per norms, strict action should be taken against them immediately.”

“An immediate inquiry should be conducted to identify if any officers of MCD are responsible for this tragedy. If any official is found guilty, the strongest possible action will be taken against them, under intimation to the undersigned,” Oberoi said.
