Delhi schools closed after bomb threat calls, police suspect hoax

Date:

Delhi Police launched a massive search operation after multiple schools in Delhi and the National Capital Region received bomb threats via email on Wednesday morning. All the schools in Delhi were evacuated, and students sent home safely.

The strongly worded threat mail, that appeared to have been copied (cc) and sent to multiple users is suspected to be a hoax as nothing has been recovered from any school so far, said the police, who have taken up technical probe to point out the source of the emails.

Speaking to the media, DCP Central, Devesh Kumar Mahla said, “We have checked all the schools and nothing has been found, there is no need to panic.” Suman Nalla, PRO Delhi Police, told the media that she would not like to divulge the exact number of schools that have received the threat mail, which she said: “It has been sent to create panic.”

According to the police, Delhi Public School’s (DPS) Dwarka and Vasant Kunj units, Mother Mary School in East Mayur Vihar, Sanskriti School in Chanakyapuri, Amity School in Pushp Vihar, and DAV School in South West Delhi have all received bomb threats. DPS Noida, which is in a high security zone, has also received a similar bomb threat.

Immediately after receiving information about the threats, the police took action and evacuated all the schools. The schools have been closed, and the students were sent back home, a Delhi Police officer said.

“Checking is underway at all the schools, and our technical wing is investigating the email,” he added. The deputy commissioners police of Southwest Delhi and Dwarka told the media that the threat mails were sent around 4.30 am.

The schools informed parents around 6.30 am, when either their wards were getting ready or had left for schools.

“Bomb detection teams, bomb disposal squads, and Delhi Fire Service officials have been sent to the schools, and a search operation is underway,” the police said. The CCTV footages of all schools are being checked and sniffer dogs are being used on ground to detect any misadventure.

“Multiple schools have received similar bomb threat emails. We are checking each and every school and are in contact with the school administration,” the police added.

Meanwhile, Delhi LG Vinai Kumar Saxena spoke to the Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora and sought a detailed report into the bomb threats at schools in Delhi-NCR. He directed the Police to carry out a thorough search of school premises, identify the culprits and ensure there are no lapses. He further urged parents not to panic and co-operate with the administration in ensuring the safety of schools and the children. The miscreants and culprits will not be spared, he said

Delhi Education Minister Atishi posted on X from her official handle (@AtishiAAP) and said: “Some schools have received bomb threats today morning. Students have been evacuated and those premises are being searched by Delhi Police. So far nothing has been found in any of the schools.

“We are in constant touch with the Police and the schools. Would request parents and citizens not to panic. School authorities will be in touch with parents wherever needed.”

Most evacuation following set SOP created least panic and students were sent away peacefully so far, as per several teachers and parents’ accounts.
