Ex-MP Dhananjay Singh released from Bareilly jail

Date:

Former MP Dhananjay Singh was on Wednesday released from the Bareilly central jail after getting bail from the Allahabad High Court in a four-year-old kidnapping case, a jail official said here.

Senior Jail Superintendent Avinash Gautam said that Dhananjay Singh, who was shifted to Bareilly jail from Jaunpur on April 27 on administrative ground, was released this morning. “The former MP was released after a release order was received through a special messenger,” he said.

Initially it was expected that Dhananjay would be released by Tuesday but it was delayed as release order was not received by the jail authorities. “After getting released Dhananjay left for Jaunpur from where his wife Shrikala is contesting Lok Sabha election on Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket.

After getting released from the jail the former MP claimed that he was convicted in a false case. “My wife is contesting elections from Jaunpur and I will go straight to the constituency,” he said.

It may be noted that on April 27 the High Court granted bail to former MP Dhananjay Singh in an almost four year old kidnapping and extortion case in which he was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment.

The single bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh while granting bail to Dhananjay refused to stay his conviction by the lower court. The former MP had filed a review petition in the High Court challenging his conviction by the lower court, they said.

After hearing both the sides the court reserved its judgement on April 25. It may be noted that on March 6 Dhananjay Singh and his aide were sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment along with a penalty of Rs 50,000 each by a special court in Jaunpur in an almost four-year-old kidnapping and extortion case.
