Mirwaiz allowed to travel to Delhi: Anjuman

Date:

Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid said on Tuesday that its president, Mirwaz Umar Farooq, was allowed by the J&K authorities to travel to New Delhi on a personal visit.

This is Mirwiaz’s first visit to Delhi after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

In a statement, the Anjuman said, ‘Mirwaiz, who is also the chief cleric, was allowed by the state authorities to travel to New Delhi on January 8.’

“Mirwaiz had conveyed the personal nature of his visit, after which the authorities allowed him,” the statement said, adding that “despite his release from house detention in September 2023, he is repeatedly detained at his house, especially on Fridays.”

Mirwaiz will be back in a couple of weeks, the statement added.

On January 6, the Anjuman alleged that the administration barred the chief cleric from leading prayers at the historic Jamia mosque in Srinagar for 13 consecutive weeks without any reason.
