Kerala Chief Minister Punarayi Vijayan on Thursday announced in the State Assembly that the Tanur custodial death case will be handed over to the CBI.

The Chief Minister said this while replying to an adjournment motion in this regard moved by IUML MLA N. Samsudheen alleging that Tirurangadi native Tamir Jiffri (30) was brutally tortured during the custody in Tanur police station leading to his death.

The post-mortem report revealed that there are 21 fresh wounds on his body. He was taken into custody in connection with the use of drugs.

In his reply, the Chief Minister said 8 policemen were suspended in connection with the death of the man and assured that the Government will not support guilty people in the police service.

Opposition leader VD Satheesan said the CPI-M was responsible for criminalisation of police force and the Government was not serious about stopping crimes by policemen.

Pointing out several police atrocities recently, the Opposition members staged a walkout from the house.
