Urban body polls only after reservation to OBC: Yogi

Date:

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said that the state government will set up a commission in the perspective of urban body general elections and provide reservation facility to the citizens of Other Backward Classes (OBC) on the basis of the triple test.

He said that the urban body general elections will be conducted only after the exercise is completed.

Yogi tweeted, “The UP government will set up a commission in the perspective of urban body general elections and provide reservation facility to the citizens of Other Backward Classes (OBC) on the basis of the triple test exercise. The urban body general elections will be conducted only after this.”

He said that if found necessary the state government will also appeal in the Supreme Court. “After considering all the legal aspects related to the decision of the High Court, the state government will also file an appeal in the SC,” he said.

Urban Development Minister AK Sharma too said that local body elections will be held only after giving reservation to the OBC. “In the series of the directives issued by the High Court, the local body elections will be held only after completing the process of triple test/condition regarding OBC reservation and setting up a Commission on this and after studying the HC’s decisions,” he said.

He said that in the petitions filed in the HC, the petitioners themselves demanded that local body elections for the year 2022 should be conducted with OBC reservation and such an order should be issued.
