Veteran politician SM Krishna passes away

Date:

Karnataka and India lost one of their most distinguished statesmen on Tuesday as veteran politician and former Chief Minister SM Krishna passed away at the age of 92.

Krishna, revered as the architect of modern Bengaluru, breathed his last at his residence at 2:45 am after battling health issues for some time.

A towering figure in Indian politics, Krishna’s illustrious career spanned decades, marked by landmark achievements and a visionary approach to governance. Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli village, Mandya district, Krishna began his political journey in 1962 as an Independent MLA representing the Maddur constituency.

His tenure as the Chief Minister of Karnataka (1999–2004) is remembered for ushering in an era of unprecedented growth and development. It was during his leadership that Bengaluru emerged as the Silicon Valley of India, gaining global recognition as a hub for technology and innovation.

Krishna’s contributions extended beyond Karnataka. He served as the Governor of Maharashtra (2004–2008) and as India’s External Affairs Minister (2009–2012), where his diplomatic skills strengthened India’s global standing.

An academician at heart, Krishna was an alumnus of Maharaja’s College in Mysuru and the Government Law College, Bengaluru. His quest for knowledge took him to the United States, where he earned degrees from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, and George Washington University.

Initially a long-serving member of the Congress Party, Krishna’s decision to join the BJP later in his career demonstrated his adaptability and commitment to public service over party lines.

A visionary leader, Krishna’s legacy lies in his unwavering dedication to progress, be it in governance, urban development, or foreign policy. His passing marks the end of an era in Karnataka’s political history, leaving an indelible mark on the state and the nation.

As tributes pour in from across the country, SM Krishna will be remembered as a statesman who combined intellect with action, modernised Karnataka, and inspired generations of leaders.
