Amid vehement protests across demanding justice for the rape and murder of a young lady government doctor at R G Kar Hospital in the city, Governor CV Ananda Bose on Monday alleged Bengal is not a safe place for women under the present regime.
“Bengal has failed its women. Not the society but the present
government has failed its women folk. Bengal should be brought back to its pristine glory where women had a respectable place in
society…Women now are scared of ‘gundas’ that have been created by the government that is insensitive to this issue,” Bose, who has been keeping in touch with the central leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, said.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police today dismissed its summon notices to city’s two senior doctors Subarna Goswami and Kunal Sarkar after they reported to the Lalbazar, where thousands of medical practitioners waited outside the gate till they returned after an hour.
The duo was summoned separately on Saturday to appear after they were accused of distorting the fact of the crime.
“We are out of Lalbazar after getting a written dismissal order of
the accusation,” Goswami told reporters outside the Police
headquarters in central Kolkata.
Meanwhile, R G Kar Hospital’s ousted principal Sandip Ghosh on Monday appeared for the fourth straight day before the CBI officials at the CGO office after being grilled for nearly 40 hours
by the federal agency in the past three days.
A massive protest march of the judicial professionals of Calcutta
High Court was organised to demand justice.
“Time has come to condemn strongly the lawlessness prevailing across Bengal,” a senior advocate participating in the protest rally said.
” As a Bengali I feel ashamed, and it’s a shame for all for the whole
Bengali community,” he told reporters.
Senior Barristers, senior advocates and their assistants moved around Calcutta High Court. The women lawyers were at the front in the silent March.
The medics, both senior and juniors wearing rakhi, also marched
through the streets from the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in central Kolkata.
Another massive rally in south Kolkata comprising medics, students and faculty of the Jadavpur University was organised
from the KPC Hospital to the Jadavpur University.
The junior medics vowed to carry on movement but would attend the emergency services in all the government hospitals.
Many retired doctors in the age of 60s, 70s and 80s joined in the
sit-in-demonstration near the troubled RG Kar hospital where the crime happened in the wee hours on August 9.
