BJP-Tipra Motha talks may reach crucial stage before Sept 08

Date:

Agartala, 2nd September 2026 :   With the deadline for filing nominations for the upcoming Village Committee elections approaching, the BJP and Tipra Motha are likely to hold a high-level meeting in New Delhi before September 8 to explore the possibility of an electoral understanding.

The talks come at a time when both parties are stepping up preparations for the elections to the Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). Seat-sharing is understood to be one of the key issues under discussion, with differences reportedly persisting over the terms of a possible arrangement.

The BJP’s central leadership is currently taking a close look at the party’s preparedness in Tripura. National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh is leading a central team that includes North East coordinator Sambit Patra, co-coordinator Rajiv Babbar, Tripura in-charge Dr Rajdeep Roy and Assam and Tripura General Secretary (Organisation) GR Ravindra Raju.

Although the BJP has described the visit as an organisational exercise, party sources said the delegation is also reviewing the party’s electoral prospects and organisational strength ahead of the VC polls.

BJP state president Abhishek Debroy said the visiting leaders held discussions on several organisational matters and asserted that the party was ready to contest the elections. On a possible understanding with Tipra Motha, he said talks were continuing and that the details would be announced once a decision was reached.

Tipra Motha, meanwhile, has begun its own candidate-selection process. The party’s 14-member election committee has authorised its local leadership to identify and finalise candidates.

A senior Tipra Motha leader said there was no immediate meeting scheduled with the BJP but indicated that discussions could take place in New Delhi before the September 8 nomination deadline.

The proposed alliance has become politically significant after the BJP contested the recent TTAADC elections on its own while Tipra Motha continued to retain considerable influence in the tribal council. With nominations drawing closer, both sides are now under pressure to settle their differences and determine whether they will enter the VC polls together.
