11th Yonex-Sunrise India Open commences on Jan 17

The 11th edition of Yonex-Sunrise India Open part of HSBC BWF World Tour would be played at the KD Jadhav indoor hall in New Delhi from January 17-22. The tournament which has been upgraded to the BWF world tour super 750 status from this year will see almost all the top 10 ranked players of the world across the five categories compete for glory over the next 6 days for a total price purse of USD 850000.

Tokyo Olympics gold medalists Victor Alexsen of Denmark and China’s Chen Yufei along with reigning women’s singles world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan would be some of world’s best badminton players at the tournament. In total 242 players from across 22 countries would compete. China has sent the largest contingent with 15 male and 15 female players, Japan’s contingent is second largest with 29 players.

“The upgradation of Yonex sunrise India open to super 750 category is it testament to the growth of badminton as one of the most popular sport in India and the ability of a players to perform consistently at the world stage the last edition of the tournament was held behind close doors due to kovid restrictions but this year badminton lovers would get a chance to feast on high quality badminton and we have gone all out to make it bigger” said Badminton Association of India president Dr Hemanta biswa Sharma.

BWF Vice President, Pan Am, Vishnu Tolan said. “with Yonex sunrise India open 2023 now holding super 750 status on the HSBC BWF world tour and India players enjoying great success on the court recently we expect remainder excitement and enthusiasm from the home fans this week this elevation of the India open to greater prominence is a strong vindication of the amazing potential we see for badminton here in India.”

Host India’s hope will ride on 19 member contingent led by two times Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, Thomas Cup winning team lead by world number 8 HS Prannoy, defending champion and World number 10 Lakshya Sen and World championship silver medalist in World Number 13 Kidambi Srikanth as well as commonwealth games gold medalist and fifth seed mens doubles combination of Satvik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.

“India open has been a very special tournament for all Indian players last time we had to play behind close doors but this time the India open is going to be bigger than ever and all of us are determine to make it all the more special for all are fans” said the double Olympic medalist in 2019 tournament champion PV Sindhu.

“India open has become a very important tournament in the BWF calendar and the super 70 status it has received this year shows how much the players and fans love this event the b a i as done all it can to make this and forgettable experience for players and fans and I am sure the level of badminton this week will mesmerize all” said BAI Secretary General Sanjay Mishra.
