Visually impaired Himachal woman, Kolkata cop scale Mt Everest

Visually impaired woman mountaineer from Himachal Pradesh, Chhonzin Angmo and Kolkata Armed Police Constable Laxmikanta Mondal on Monday scaled Mount Everest, the world’s tallest peak.

They scaled the peak at around 8 30 AM, making it a red letter day in India’s mountaineering history,

Kolkata Police on its X handle said Mondal, part of the security detail of Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, made the summit 8849 around 8-30 AM along with Angmo and Geeta Samota with professional sherpas Tenzing Sherpa Gelba) and Lakpa Sherpa of Pioneer Adventure of Nepal.

Angmo (28), a village girl from Kinnaur district, lost her eyesight at the age of eight.

Angmo also scaled the Siachen Glacier, the World’s Highest Battlefield, in 2021 under Operation Blue Freedom.

Kolkata Police saluted the successful summiters from India.

A separate report said fifty-two-year-old Mohan Rawat, an instructor with Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF), successfully scaled the World’s highest peak on Sunday.

Rawat summited Mount Everest early on May 18 and spent around 15 minutes at the top before beginning his descent. UNI PC SSP
