Brazil-US ties not unconditional: FM

Date:

Brazil’s relationship with the United States is not unconditional, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira told a committee under the Chamber of Deputies, amid concerns that new U.S. restrictions could affect Brazilian citizens.

Vieira voiced concern over the U.S. government’s recent decision to suspend new visas for international students.

“It’s a worrying situation. We have a large number of Brazilian students at U.S. universities, and we’ll have to monitor how this unfolds,” he said on Wednesday.

Vieira stressed that under international agreements, host countries are obligated to grant visas for multilateral events, including those held by the United Nations or the Organization of American States.

The U.S. visa suspension is raising alarm in Brazil due to its potential to disrupt academic ties. Officials warned the move could hinder talent exchange and slow academic cooperation between the two countries. Access to higher education abroad remains a key pillar in Brazil’s national strategy for workforce development and innovation, Vieira said.
