UK concerns over Indians’ security

Date:

India has shared its concerns over the security of the Indian community in United Kingdom with British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar discussed the issue with United Kingdom Foreign Secretary James Cleverly on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and welcomed the assurances given by him.

“A warm conversation with UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly. Discussed taking forward Roadmap 2030. Appreciate his commitment to deepening our partnership. Our conversation also covered global issues including Indo-Pacific, Ukraine and UNSC matters,” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in a tweet.

“Shared my concern about the security and welfare of the Indian community in UK. Welcomed his assurances in that regard,” he added in thread.

The United Kingdom has recently witnessed a number of violent communal clashes in the eastern England city of Leicester with reports of a Hindu temple being vandalised and a saffron flag outside the temple pulled down by a communally charged mob.

Besides, videos shared on a number of social media platforms showed a large crowd chanting slogans of ‘Allahu Akbar’ marching towards the Durga Bhawan Hindu Centre in Smethwick town in West Midlands, England.

Following the incidents, the Indian High Commission also urged the authorities to provide protection to the affected Indian community.

Strongly condemning the violence perpetrated against the Indian community in Leicester, the Indian High Commission, in a statement, protested the violence and vandalising of the Hindu temple in Leicester.

“We have strongly taken up this matter with the UK authorities and have sought immediate action against those involved in these attacks. We call on the authorities to provide protection to the affected people,” the High Commission said.

“We will not tolerate violence, disorder or intimidation in Leicester, and we continue to call for calm and dialogue. Our police operations and investigations continue with rigour and at scale,” said Leicestershire Police in a statement.
