Burmese Cigarette smuggling foiled: Kailashahar police seize Rs 20 lakh worth of contraband at Chinibagan Naka Point

Agartala, 6th August 2025 :  Tripura police at Chinibagan Naka Point in Kailashahar intercepted a Bolero vehicle transporting 39 cartons of Burmese cigarettes valued at approximately ₹20 lakh. The vehicle, bearing registration number TR02F-0799 was en route from Dharmanagar to Kailashahar when it was flagged for inspection.

Acting on suspicion, Kailashahar Police Station staff with active support from the Border Security Force (BSF) conducted a thorough search and uncovered the illicit consignment. The driver identified as Sudip Nath (38), a resident of Tilthai in Panisagar was taken into custody.

Officer-in-Charge Tapas Malakar confirmed that preliminary investigations suggest the cigarettes were intended for smuggling into Bangladesh. “We have detained both the vehicle and the driver. A formal case will be registered under relevant legal provisions,” he stated.

Malakar credited the successful operation to the coordinated efforts between the police and BSF, emphasizing that the joint vigilance at Chinibagan Naka Point was instrumental in thwarting the smuggling attempt.

Following the seizure, security measures have been intensified across the region. Police sources revealed that interrogation of the arrested individual is underway, and efforts are being made to identify other members of the smuggling network.
