2-day workshop on ‘Empowering Women for a Progressive Society: Perspective & Pathways’ held at GDC, Kamalpur

Agartala, 7th August 2025:  Two-Day Workshop on “Empowering Women for a Progressive Society: Perspective and Pathways” under Gender Inclusion and Equity Initiative (GIEI) Scheme of Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) organized by Government Degree College Kamalpur was inaugurated on Thursday at Bimal Sinha Sabhagriha of the college.

The Chief Guest & Inaugurator of the program was the Honourable Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman. The Guests included dignitaries like Animesh Debbarma, Director of Higher Education, Tripura as the Guest of Higher, Dr. Monisankar Misra, ace academician from Tripura University, Prasanta Sinha, Chairman, Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat. The program was inaugurated by watering a sapling & song by the students of the college.

The welcome speech was rendered by Dr. Astamika Sinha, the Organizing Secretary of the workshop. Dr. Sinha, through her deliberation, stated that the presence of Higher Minister for the very first time in the college itself is a source of inspiration & encouragement to the students. She also added that the gender equity scheme is a watershed initiative of the Government to significantly increase the academic discourse, especially the marginalized section of society.

Then Dr. Monisankar Misra, through his deliberation, focused on the innate relationship between consciousness & empowerment. Dr. Misra also highlighted the ideas of rights & duties. He further threw light on the history of women empowerment since the days of the colonial period.

Prasanta Sinha highly appreciated the scheme of PM-USHA for endeavouring such innovative &mind-provoking workshops.

The Director of Higher Education department Animesh Debbarma also highlighted the various schemes of the Central & State Government, which encourage& focus on the life & academia of marginalized sections. The chief guest of the Program Kishor Barman, through his vivid discussion, spoke about the significance of women power in the legacy of Indian culture. He cited the example of Mata Durga & also gave the reference of the Bhagavad Gita. He also heartily thanked the innovative ideas of GIEI Scheme, which increases dialogues, a new realm to the academic field.

In the end, the Presidential speech was given by Dr. Abhijit Sarkar, the Principal of the College. Dr. Sarkar opined that a progressive society must empower women to promote equality, growth, and constructive social change. It involves providing equal opportunities, access to education and healthcare, economic independence, and protection from violence, alongside challenging harmful social norms and promoting women’s leadership. Women may fully engage in all facets of life, which benefits both them and society at large.

Dr. Sarkar also highlighted the various remedial coaching classes taken up by Government Degree College Kamalpur, especially for the Class XII students of nearby schools in the sub-division. Dr. Sarkar also hoped that in the upcoming days, there would be significant funding coming up from the authorities for the collegeto implement beneficial schemes.

The Dias was also adorned by Dr. Bimal Chandra Das, Nodal Officer of PM-USHA of the college & Dr. Swapan Sharma, Secretary, Teachers’ Council of the college. The anchoring of the whole inaugural session was done by Srinibas Debnath, senior faculty of the college.

The Resource person of the first technical session was Dr. Monisankar Misra, Head and Associate Professor, Department of History, Tripura University on the topic “Women and Social reform movements in nineteenth-century India”. The second technical session was by the Resource Person,Smt. Aparna Das, Officer-in-Charge, Women Police Station, Ambassa on the sub-theme “Crime against Women and POCSO”

The other three technical sessions will be on 8th August 2025. The Resource Person of the third session is Dr. Prasenjit Das, Senior Resident, Dept. of Paediatrics, AGMC, Government of Tripura, on the title “Women’s Health and Well-Being: Bridging Gaps in Healthcare”. Advocate Saini Sarkar, Assistant Professor in Law, Techno India University, Agartala is the Resource Person for the fourth session on “Growing Concern of Cyber obscenity – a gender specific crime, with special reference to Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita”. The Resource Person for the fifth session is Dr. Abhijit Chanda, Associate Professor, IASE, Kunjaban, Agartala. He will discuss “Various dimensions for achieving the desired goals of empowerment”.
