Agartala, 8th August 2025:   A wave of public outrage erupted at the Hawaibari checkpoint under Teliamura police station following allegations of extortion and unlawful harassment by police personnel. Drivers and vegetable traders from various parts of the state accused Constable Biswajit Malakar of demanding illegal payments under the pretext of enforcing overload fines.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts, Constable Malakar, while on duty at the checkpoint allegedly insisted that even if legal fines were not applicable, individuals must pay him Rs 100, Rs 200 or Rs 300 as a “donation.” The demand sparked anger among traders and transporters, many of whom had travelled from distant regions to buy and sell produce. In a spontaneous act of protest, the aggrieved parties gathered on the road voicing their frustration and demanding accountability.

Upon receiving reports of the unrest, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Pannalal Sen and Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jayanta Kumar Dey of Teliamura police station rushed to the scene. After engaging with the protestors, they managed to calm tensions and restore order.

Several traders later alleged that such incidents were not isolated. They claimed that police personnel stationed at the Hawaibari checkpoint frequently harass them, using threats of legal action to extract money during routine transport of goods.

In response to the allegations, police authorities have assured that a formal investigation will be conducted and appropriate action taken. As per the latest updates, disciplinary proceedings against Constable Biswajit Malakar are expected to be initiated shortly.
