Agartala, 17th August 2025: The state government has initiated a series of measures aimed at supporting agricultural production and ensuring smooth market access for farmers for doubling their income. As part of this effort, a government-backed paddy procurement program was officially launched today in the Betaga Bazar area under the supervision of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).
Santirbazar SDM Manoj Kumar Saha inaugurated the programme in presence of the Vice-Chairman of Santirbazar Municipal Council Satyabrata Saha, Chairman of the Bogafa Panchayat Samiti Krishnabati Reang and social worker Debasish Bhowmik among others.
Despite the initiative, local farmers in Betaga, known for their agricultural contributions in South Tripura are reportedly struggling to sell their produce this season. Flood damage and alleged non-cooperation from the agriculture department have left many facing significant losses.
Farmers have voiced concerns over the conduct of Bogafa Agriculture Department Supervisor Rajib Sen and Betaga-based official Ajay Sen accusing them of negligence and withholding access to government schemes. According to multiple accounts, the two officials failed to provide essential guidance on pest control and fertilizer use further exacerbating the challenges faced by cultivators.
Comparisons were drawn to former supervisor Sujit Kumar Das, who was praised for his proactive field engagement and consistent support to farmers. In contrast, Rajib Sen is said to spend most of his time in his office, with many farmers reportedly unfamiliar with him.
Allegations have also surfaced regarding a paddy procurement scam from the previous year, in which Rajib Sen and Ajay Sen were allegedly involved in facilitating the sale of low-cost paddy sourced from outside the region through a network of middlemen. These intermediaries reportedly profited by selling the grain at higher government rates, with a portion of the earnings allegedly diverted to the two officials.
Sources suggest that similar tactics may be underway this year to meet procurement targets. However, local farmers appear more vigilant and have warned of protests if such practices continue.
Speaking to the media, Vice Chairman Satyabrata Saha and SDM Manoj Kumar Saha reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fair procurement and farmer welfare. “We are closely monitoring the process to ensure transparency and accountability,” said SDM Saha.
