Agartala, 19th August 2025: Tensions flared in Bhattapukur in the capital city following allegations that a group of youth affiliated with the ruling party assaulted several women during a local religious celebration. The incident reportedly took place on the day of Mansha Puja. This incident has prompted massive criticism and demands for immediate police action.
Local residents informed that the altercation began over a dispute involving a parked motorcycle. When a youth from the area attempted to intervene and inquire about the commotion, he was allegedly pushed to the ground. Witnesses claim that shortly afterward, 20 to 25 intoxicated youths identified as members of the Shuktara Sangha Club launched a violent attack on him.
In a bid to protect the youth, his mother, sister-in-law and other women from the neighborhood rushed to the scene. However, they too were allegedly assaulted by the group, who reportedly used obscene language and tore the women’s clothing. Eyewitnesses say the attackers claimed to be the sons of Asim Bhattacharjee, a local leader of the ruling party.
Despite filing a complaint with the Arundhatinagar police station, residents say no action has been taken in the two days since the incident. Today, women from the area staged a protest, accusing the police of inaction and alleging that the accused have instead filed counter-cases.
Local women have warned that if the perpetrators are not arrested promptly, they will escalate the matter to the Chief Minister. They further allege that Shuktara Sangha Club has long been a hub for antisocial activities, including land dealings and drug trafficking, with several families reportedly amassing vast wealth overnight.
“The police and local leaders are turning a blind eye. Some are receiving hush money, while others are watching their bank balances grow. These so-called leaders are using young men as pawns,” said one protester.
Residents are now calling for a thorough investigation and immediate intervention to restore safety and justice in Bhattapukur.
