Kiran Bedi calls Greater Noida dowry killer beast, beggar

Date:

Former Delhi Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi today condemned the Greater Noida dowry death case, describing the accused husband as “a beast and a beggar” for demanding dowry, and demanded swift justice.
Kiran Bedi cited chilling evidence in the case, including the testimony of Nikki’s child: “Papa ne Mama ko mara,” calling it clear and undeniable proof of the crime. She pointed out that the victim’s family had already provided substantial dowry, yet harassment and demands continued unabated.
“The father and sister confirm continuous dowry demands. What more evidence do you need? This is a pure open-and-shut case,” Kiran Bedi told reporters here, urging authorities to complete the investigation within weeks and ensure punishment within six months.
Criticising societal apathy, Kiran Bedi warned that Indian society is producing “literate beggars,” with parents and communities often failing to protect daughters, thereby perpetuating the cancer of dowry. She called on families, neighbors, and local authorities to take responsibility, stressing that educated women should not be forced into unsafe homes.
In the Greater Noida case, Nikki’s family had provided substantial dowry, including a Scorpio vehicle, but faced continuous harassment for additional demands, escalating to ₹60 lakh or a Mercedes. Despite leaving her in-laws’ home six months prior due to abuse, Nikki returned after a panchayat intervention, hoping for resolution. Tragically, she was later murdered by her husband and in-laws.
The case has sparked nationwide outrage, with calls for stricter enforcement of anti-dowry laws and greater accountability for those perpetuating such practices.
