Agartala, 22nd September 2025:   In observance of Poshan Maah, the Tripura Commission for Women organized a one-day awareness workshop this afternoon at Purba Gokulnagar Higher Secondary School located within the Kamalasagar assembly constituency. The event focused on two pressing social issues: child marriage and substance abuse.

The workshop was attended by Commission Chairperson Jharna Debbarma, Vice Chairperson Advocate Madhumita Choudhury, school principal Chinmoy Majumder along with faculty members and students.

Addressing the gathering, Chairperson Debbarma emphasized that child marriage remains a serious social malaise and a punishable offense under Indian law. Despite legal restrictions, she noted that some parents in the state continue to marry off their underage daughters, often unaware of the long-term consequences. “Early marriage causes severe physical harm and psychological stress for young girls,” she said, urging students to focus on education and personal goals rather than succumbing to societal pressures.

Vice Chairperson Choudhury also spoke on the growing menace of substance abuse among Tripura’s youth. She expressed concern that not only young men but increasingly young women are falling prey to addiction. “This deadly habit is pushing our youth toward destruction,” she warned, calling for collective resistance against drug abuse and those who profit from it.

The workshop concluded with a call to action for students and educators alike to become advocates for change in their communities.
