Agartala, 3rd October 2025: . The historic Prabhu Bari Durga Puja, one of Tripura’s oldest celebrations dating back to approximately 1849, witnessed an unexpected mishap during this year’s immersion ceremony. Instituted by Maharaja Eshan Chandra Manikya Bahadur, the puja has been a continuous tradition in Agartala, and since 2009, it has been officially conducted under government patronage alongside the renowned Durga Bari Puja.

As per tradition, the idol is carried on shoulders to Dashami Ghat on the evening of Bijaya Dashami, where it is immersed with full state honors. This year, while the ceremonial seven circumambulations were being performed prior to immersion, the idol tilted and partially fell to one side. Eyewitnesses attributed the incident to negligence and haste, suggesting that a more measured approach could have prevented the mishap.

Criticism was also directed at the Agartala Municipal Corporation and local administration, who reportedly remained passive during the procession. The idol bearers, acting on their own strength and enthusiasm, inadvertently caused the imbalance. Observers questioned the absence of administrative support, especially given the state-sponsored nature of the farewell ritual.

Fortunately, the idol did not suffer significant damage, and the immersion proceeded as planned. Nonetheless, the incident has sparked debate over the need for better coordination and safety measures during such culturally significant events.
