Agartala, 17th November 2025: Teliamura police have arrested two leaders of the Tipra Motha party after seizing a large quantity of cannabis near Trishabari railway station. Acting on a tip-off, officers intercepted the duo while they were allegedly transporting the contraband.

Police sources informed that the haul amounted to 17.9 kilograms of cannabis, with an estimated black-market value of over Rs 3.5 lakh. The arrested individuals have been identified as Santosh Debbarma and Shyamal Debbarma. One hails from the Radhapur police station area, while the other is from Mandai.

Authorities confirmed that a case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and legal proceedings are underway. Police further noted that seizures of cannabis and other illegal substances around Trishabari railway station have become a recurring issue, raising questions about the role and vigilance of the Government Railway Police (GRP).

The arrest has drawn particular attention because Santosh Debbarma is known to be an active leader within the Tipra Motha party. Reports suggest he has close ties with party supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and is politically nurtured under the influence of MDC Ganesh Debbarma.

Observers now await Pradyot Kishore’s response to the incident, given his frequent calls for safeguarding the community and upholding its values. The detention of a close associate in connection with narcotics has sparked debate over accountability within the party’s leadership.
