Agartala, 25th November 2025: In a shocking incident at Madhupur Jamchoumuhani under the Kamalasagar Assembly constituency, two unidentified youths allegedly duped a woman and fled with her gold chain weighing nearly two bhori (approx. 20 grams).
According to reports, the youths entered the residence of Uttam Debnath when he was away. His wife, Anita Debnath, initially assumed they were representatives from a finance company. When questioned, the duo claimed they were offering to clean brass and silver items.
Trusting them, Anita handed over her daughter’s silver ornaments and a brass plate from the prayer room. The youths applied a powder and demonstrated the cleaning process, convincing her of their authenticity. Moments later, they persuaded Anita to remove the gold chain from her neck, promising to polish it with the same powder.
The chain was placed inside a paper packet with instructions that it should be opened after half an hour. Meanwhile, the youths allegedly sprayed a liquid substance that caused temporary disorientation, allowing them to escape with the chain.
Within seconds, Anita realized the deception and rushed outside, shouting for help. However, the culprits had already fled. Unbeknownst to them, the house was equipped with CCTV cameras, which captured their movements.
Anita later lodged a complaint at Madhupur police station, demanding strict punishment for the accused. She stated that the stolen chain was valued at over ₹2 lakh.
Residents fear such gangs are targeting unsuspecting rural women across the state, tricking them into handing over valuables under the guise of cleaning services. Locals believe that with proper investigation and use of CCTV footage, police will be able to apprehend the culprits soon.
