Agartala, 26th November 2025: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) today staged a four-hour sit-in protest at the foot of the Gandhi statue near the Circuit House, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been harassing members of a particular community by demanding birth certificates and other documents despite no directive from the Election Commission.
The demonstration led to scuffles between protesters and police, following which several TMC activists were detained and taken to the police lines at AD Nagar.
Speaking at the protest, TMC leader Santanu Saha questioned the rationale behind such demands. “When the Election Commission has not issued any notice, why are ordinary people being asked to produce birth certificates, address proofs, and identity papers? This is nothing but deliberate harassment,” he said.
Saha further alleged that the administration has remained passive, creating fear among minority communities. He drew parallels with West Bengal, claiming that BJP workers there had spread panic and were attempting to replicate the same in Tripura.
The youth wing of the TMC announced that the sit-in was organized to highlight multiple issues, including the demand to stop unnecessary harassment over documents, ensure minority security, uphold administrative transparency, and protect democratic rights.
Accusing the ruling party of deliberately sowing confusion among citizens, Saha warned that the opposition would launch a larger movement if such practices were not stopped immediately.
Meanwhile, a police official stated that the protest was held without prior permission and disrupted traffic. “They organized the sit-in without approval, causing obstruction to movement. Hence, they were detained and taken to AD nagar police lines,” the official said.
