Agartala, 29th November 2025: The recent redevelopment of College Tilla Lake under the Smart City project has sparked concern among environmentalists and local residents. A park constructed along the lake’s banks is being criticized as “unscientific,” with experts warning that the changes have disrupted the natural habitat of migratory birds.
For decades, College Tilla Lake was a seasonal haven for thousands of migratory birds arriving each winter. The lake served as a vital stopover along their transcontinental routes, creating a spectacular display of nature that became part of the area’s identity.
This year, however, residents report that the birds have not returned. Environmentalists argue that the redevelopment particularly the construction of the park has damaged the ecosystem, depriving the birds of their traditional resting grounds. “The true beauty of the lake was in the flocking of migratory birds, not in artificial structures,” one local resident remarked, urging the government to intervene.
According to community sources, the Human Rights Commission has already taken cognizance of the issue, raising questions about the ecological impact of the project.
