Agartala, 1st December 2025:     The CPI(M) Sonamura Sub-Divisional Committee on Monday organized a memorial meeting in honor of late Gouranga Thakur, drawing hundreds of party leaders and workers. The program, held at the Mozaffar Bhavan in Sonamura, was attended by former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar along with senior leaders Manik Dey, Suresh Das, Ratan Saha, Shyamal Chakraborty and Ahidur Rahman.

Earlier in the day, the CPI(M) Melaghar Regional Committee had hosted the first memorial service. The sub-divisional gathering at 1:30 p.m. marked a significant moment, bringing together party workers from across the subdivision to pay tribute to Thakur, who passed away on November 18 while undergoing treatment at GB Hospital, Agartala. He was 74.

Thakur is survived by his wife and two daughters. A lifelong activist, he began his political journey as a student leader, later serving in youth organizations, and most recently as district secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha. His sudden demise has left a void in the organizational strength of the Sonamura division.

Speakers at the memorial recalled Thakur’s decades of struggle and his role in strengthening the party. Sarkar, in his address, emphasized that death is a natural reality but Thakur’s unfinished work must be carried forward in the interest of the people, especially in today’s challenging political climate. He urged party workers to remain vigilant and united, stating, “The true meaning of this memorial lies in advancing Gouranga Thakur’s mission with courage and responsibility.”

The event was marked by floral tributes at Thakur’s portrait and emotional recollections of his contributions, underscoring his enduring legacy within the CPI(M).
