Agartala, 4th December 2025 : The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) took to the streets today, denouncing the newly implemented labour codes as “draconian” and staging a protest march across several city routes. Workers and supporters joined the demonstration, voicing strong opposition to the central government’s decision.
Addressing the rally, CITU state committee president Manik Dey launched a scathing attack on the Centre, alleging that the new labour laws are “anti-worker” and designed to curtail the rights of the working class. He noted that the government enforced the codes on November 21, claiming the move was intended to serve corporate interests rather than safeguard labour rights.
Dey argued that nearly 90 percent of the country’s population including the unemployed, elderly and farmers would remain outside the ambit of these laws. He further stated that the government scrapped 29 existing labour laws and replaced them with four codes, which he described as “anti-labour.”
According to him, the new framework empowers corporations to extend working hours from 8 to 12 hours, while creating uncertainty around social security provisions such as provident fund and gratuity. He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the labour codes, warning that failure to do so would trigger larger, nationwide movements by workers and supporters in the coming days.
