TPCC Slams Modi Government’s Economic Policies, Announces Statewide Protest on December 8

Agartala, 5th December 2025: The state Congress has sharply criticized the Modi government’s economic decisions, alleging that a series of policies—including the privatization of public sector units, new labour laws, and the proposed Seed Bill 2025 and Electricity Bill 2025—are undermining public interest and strengthening corporate control.

At a press conference today, Pradesh Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty accused the Centre of “systematically weakening democratic institutions and public welfare to favour corporate interests.”

According to the party, since 2014 the Union government has been “eroding democratic values, promoting propaganda, and encouraging divisive politics.” The Congress claimed that widespread privatization, pro-corporate financial decisions, and measures allegedly harmful to workers have pushed large sections of the population into economic distress.

The party further stated that 204,238 companies have shut down in the past five years, while the number of “shell and fraudulent companies” has risen sharply. Many firms, it alleged, closed operations without clearing workers’ dues. Citing a decline in industrial production, contraction in the power sector, and sluggish consumer demand, the Congress argued that the government’s GDP growth claims are “misleading and detached from reality.”

The party strongly objected to the new labour codes, saying they would curtail the rights of 90% of the country’s workforce. It also warned that the Seed Bill 2025 would hand over control of seeds and pricing to corporate entities, leaving farmers vulnerable. Similarly, the Electricity Bill 2025, the party claimed, would eliminate cross-subsidies—causing electricity costs to rise sharply for rural households and farmers.

If implemented, these bills would “shift control of the country’s power and agricultural systems into the hands of corporations while weakening state regulation,” the party alleged.

The Congress also raised privacy concerns regarding the government’s digital surveillance initiative Sanchar Saathi, stating that despite the withdrawal of certain guidelines due to public pressure, “a clear and legally revised notification is essential” to ensure data protection.

As part of its nationwide agitation, the Congress has announced a statewide protest on December 8, which will include marches and the symbolic burning of draft copies of the Seed Bill and Electricity Bill. The party said the campaign will continue across the country to “protect public interest and democratic rights.”
