Agartala, 10th December 2025:   Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder on Wednesday inspected the Nagicherra Fish Transhipment Yard on the outskirts of the capital to review its operations and identify gaps in its current functioning. During the visit, he held discussions with officials and members of the yard’s managing committee to evaluate the available infrastructure and service delivery.

The Mayor told reporters that the facility was created to divert the unloading of fish-laden trucks from the city’s congested markets, a move aimed at reducing traffic pressure and improving hygiene standards in urban commercial zones. He noted that the transhipment yard provides resting space, food and relaxation facilities for drivers, while fish arriving in bulk from within and outside the state are stored in the on-site cold storage unit. The project, constructed at a cost of Rs 3.50 crore, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on October 12, 2023.

Majumder acknowledged that several issues persist at the yard and said the Agartala Municipal Corporation is working on corrective measures. Planned interventions include establishing a dedicated room for security personnel, ensuring reliable drinking water supply and installing adequate lighting across the premises.

He added that the Nagicherra Fish Transhipment Yard continues to play a key role in easing urban congestion, enhancing cleanliness in city markets and advancing the state’s broader push for modern, efficient infrastructure.
