Roadwork stones cause fatal accident at Melaghar

Agartala, 16th December 2025:   Road construction materials left on the main highway turned fatal last night when a 50-year-old man, identified as Biswajit Debnath from Sonamura’s Bar Narayan area, met with a serious accident.

According to local sources, the ongoing international development project on the Udaipur–Matabari to Sonamura–Srimantapur road has already caused major inconvenience to commuters. While most sections have progressed, a one-kilometer stretch between Melaghar Colony and Pachar Mar Ghat remains dug up and hazardous. The contractor company, reportedly from outside the state, has left large piles of stones occupying a significant portion of the road.

During the day, these stones are visible, but at night they pose a grave danger. Vehicles and two-wheelers frequently collide with them. On Monday night, Debnath’s motorcycle struck the stones near Indira Nagar Colony in Melaghar. The bike toppled, and Debnath was thrown into a deep roadside pit about 20 feet in depth created for sidewall construction.

The loud crash alerted nearby residents. Under the leadership of local resident Pranta Das, people rushed to rescue the injured rider from the pit. He was handed over to the Melaghar Fire Service, which quickly transported him to Melaghar Hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, doctors referred him to Agartala’s GB Hospital for advanced treatment.

Melaghar police station staff later visited the accident site, recovered the motorcycle, and initiated an investigation.

Residents allege that the primary cause of the accident was the unsafe practice of leaving construction stones on the main road without proper warning signs or barricades. The incident has reignited concerns about road safety and negligence in ongoing infrastructure projects.
