Agartala, 17th December 2025: Highlighting the rich and long-standing legacy of Tripura’s tea industry, Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma today said that the state government has undertaken multiple initiatives to promote and expand Tripura tea across wider markets.
She was speaking after inaugurating the ‘Run for Tea 2025’ race and rally at the Tea Corner of Bir Chandra Central Library. The event was organised by the Tripura Tea Development Corporation Limited (TTDCL) in collaboration with the Tea Board of India.
The minister said the government has been working since 2018 to increase tea production and improve the socio-economic condition of tea workers. “Earlier, tea workers received a daily wage of ₹105, which has now been increased to Rs 204,” she said, adding that the Chief Minister’s Tea Workers Development Scheme has been launched for their welfare. Under the scheme, around 4,000 tea worker families have already been provided two ganda of land each, while the process to cover the remaining beneficiaries is underway at the district administration level.
Chakma stressed that both the Centre and the state are committed to strengthening the economy and making the country self-reliant. She called for adopting the ‘Vocal for Local’ policy by promoting and using indigenous products. “Only by working together beyond caste, religion and creed can we ensure overall development and build a new Tripura,” she said, also appealing for the creation of a drug-free society to realise the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Atmanirbhar Tripura.
Addressing the gathering as a guest of honour, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy said that Tripura tea is no less in taste and aroma compared to tea produced in other states. He informed that the state has already developed tea brands and plans are underway to establish a tea auction centre in Tripura next year. He added that Tripura tea is currently available at ration shops and various centres across the state, with efforts being made to modernise packaging and market it across India.
Tea Board of India Deputy Director Ramesh Lal Vaishya also spoke on the occasion. The programme was presided over by TTDCL Chairman Samir Ranjan Ghosh.
