Agartala, 24th December 2025: The Belonia Sub-Divisional Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today organized a two-hour sit-in demonstration demanding the repeal of four labour codes, which they described as anti-worker. The protest began at 11 a.m. at Belonia No. 1 Tilla.
During the demonstration, festoons and banners highlighted several demands. Key among them were: scrapping the “draconian” labour codes, preventing corporates from unilaterally deciding working hours, reinstating 29 earlier labour laws, and stopping one-sided benefits being extended to employers under the new codes. Additional demands were also raised to safeguard workers’ rights.
Addressing the gathering, CITU state leader Shankar Prasad Dutta strongly criticized the central government’s labour policies, alleging they were eroding workers’ rights. He reiterated the demand for the immediate withdrawal of the four labour codes.
The sit-in was attended by CITU state general secretary and former MP Shankar Prasad Datta, CITU Belonia Sub-Divisional Secretary Asish Datta, CPI(M) South District Secretary Tapas Dey, labour leaders Samir Nandi and Arup Majumdar, along with several leaders, activists, and supporters from left-affiliated workers’ organizations.
