Agartala, 25th December 2025 :   A training-cum-input distribution programme on “Rabi Onion – A Promising Cash Crop for Economic Upliftment and Livelihood Improvement in Rural Tripura” was successfully organized yesterday at Kadamtala and Dasda blocks of North Tripura. The programme was jointly conducted by the College of Agriculture, Tripura, under a NABARD-sponsored project, in collaboration with Growing Seed..

The programme focused on two Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs) promoted by Growing Seed—Karma Agro Producer Company Limited, Kadamtala, and Deo Valley Farmers Producer Company Limited, Dasda, North Tripura. More than 40 farmers associated with these FPOs actively participated in the programme and received hands-on training along with essential inputs for Rabi onion cultivation.

The technical sessions were conducted by Dr. Tridip Bhattacharjee, Horticulture Specialist, and Dr. Durga Prasad Awasti, Plant Pathologist—both Professors and Researchers at the College of Agriculture, Tripura. The experts shared practical knowledge on improved onion production technologies, crop management practices, disease prevention, and yield enhancement strategies suited to Tripura’s agro-climatic conditions.

The programme was graced by Pranab Mahajan, District Development Manager (DDM), NABARD, along with Dr. Sahanob Nath, Punam Bhattacharjee, and Biswajit Nath from Growing Seed. Their presence and interaction with farmers added significant value to the learning process and encouraged farmers to adopt onion cultivation as a viable income-generating activity.

It is noteworthy that over the past few years, onion cultivation in Tripura has shown promising results under the guidance of the College of Agriculture. With the objective of expanding this successful initiative to North Tripura, Growing Seed collaborated with the College of Agriculture to organize this programme exclusively for its promoted FPO members. This initiative is expected to strengthen farmers’ capacities, enhance farm incomes, and contribute to sustainable livelihood development in the region.

Growing Seed remains committed to promoting climate-resilient and market-oriented agricultural practices through close collaboration with academic institutions, NABARD, and farmer collectives. The organization is confident that this initiative will create a positive and lasting impact on rural livelihoods in Tripura in the coming days.
