Agartala, 7th January 2026 :   Tension gripped North Chebri Sachindra Nagar area of Khowai district today as villagers erupted in protest against allegedly inflated electricity bills following the installation of smart meters.

According to residents, smart meters were recently installed in households across the locality. Soon after, electricity bills reportedly surged several times higher than before, leaving villagers in severe financial distress. Despite repeated complaints to the electricity department, no relief was provided, fueling widespread anger.

The situation escalated when electricity department staff arrived in the area to carry out meter-related work. Villagers surrounded the officials and staged a demonstration, demanding immediate correction of the inflated bills and a transparent investigation into the smart meter system.

Khowai police station staff rushed to the spot after receiving information. Their intervention helped bring the situation under control. Officials from the electricity department assured villagers that their grievances would be examined and appropriate measures taken.
