Agartala, 15th January 2026: The Pradesh Congress has sharply criticized both the former and current state governments, calling their decisions on teacher and employee recruitment and pay “unconstitutional.”
In a press conference at Congress Bhavan here today, Pradesh Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty alleged that despite Supreme Court directives, the government has deliberately delayed ensuring permanent salaries and job security for teachers and employees.
The Congress highlighted that on January 8, the state High Court raised questions about the constitutional validity of recruitment decisions taken under both previous and current administrations. According to the party, policies introduced in 2001 and 2004 such as fixed pay and five-year contractual appointments were “entirely unconstitutional and against workers’ interests.”
Chakraborty further claimed that teachers and employees working for years on fixed pay have been denied regular pay scales, pending dearness allowance (DA), and other financial benefits. “It was the government’s responsibility to safeguard these rights as per Supreme Court orders,” he said.
The Pradesh Congress argued that reliance on contractual and fixed-pay jobs has weakened the state’s education system and administrative infrastructure, while also shrinking employment opportunities for the youth. The party also criticized the central government, accusing the state of using “lack of central approval” as an excuse to avoid creating new posts and initiating permanent recruitment, even though central funds have been used in other sectors in the past.
The Congress demanded immediate permanent appointments for teachers and employees, implementation of full pay scales, clearance of pending DA, and strict adherence to Supreme Court directives. The party warned that failure to meet these demands could lead to a larger public movement in the coming days.
