Law and order in Kailashahar has collapsed: Birajit

Agartala, 25th January 2026:   Congress MLA Birajit Sinha has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Kailashahar following violent clashes between two factions of the ruling party on Saraswati Puja day.

Addressing a press conference at the District Congress Bhavan this afternoon, Sinha held the administration’s inaction and a section of the ruling party responsible for the unrest.

District Congress President Md. Badruzzaman and senior leader Rudrendu Bhattacharjee were also present at the briefing.

Sinha alleged that a section of ruling party workers had illegally occupied an abandoned government quarter near the Unakoti Tourist Lodge and were using it for anti-social activities. He claimed the municipal chairman had unlawfully permitted its use, allowing the district youth wing president and his associates to establish a base that created fear among locals and students.

Despite a memorandum with mass signatures being submitted to the SP and SDM one-and-a-half months ago, Sinha said no action was taken. As a result, on January 23, Saraswati Puja day, clashes broke out between two ruling party groups, turning the town into a battlefield. Shops were forced to shut and panic spread among residents.

On January 24, police recovered a large cache of weapons including machetes and spears from the disputed quarter.

Sinha strongly criticized BJP Kailashahar Mandal President Pritam Ghosh, accusing him of attempting to give the incident a communal color. “Both groups involved in the clash belonged to the ruling party. There was no communal angle,” he asserted, demanding Ghosh’s immediate arrest.

Taking a swipe at Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Sinha said, “Whenever something happens in the state, the Chief Minister talks tough, but in reality no action is seen.” He urged immediate arrests of those involved and called for an end to administrative negligence, warning that otherwise law and order would deteriorate further.

Police sources confirmed that four cases have been registered in connection with the incident. On January 23, Mandal President Pritam Ghosh filed a case at Kailashahar police station. The following day, District Youth Wing President Arup Dhar lodged a case against Ghosh, Vice-Chairperson Nitish Dey, and five others. Another case was filed by Sultan Ahmed the same night, while police consolidated charges into a separate case naming Ghosh and 17 others as accused.

Since January 24 evening, large contingents of police and TSR forces have launched searches for the accused across Kailashahar, where tension continues to prevail. Following the press conference, Youth Congress submitted a deputation to the Kailashahar police station demanding immediate arrests of Ghosh and others involved.

The atmosphere in Kailashahar remains tense, with Congress leaders pressing for swift administrative action to restore normalcy.
