Agartala, 27th January 2026: A road protection project worth Rs 1 crore in Champlai Naya Bari, under the 29-Krishnapur assembly constituency, has sparked serious allegations of corruption and poor-quality work. The project, aimed at preventing road erosion by placing boulders, has come under fire from local residents who claim the materials used are substandard.
Residents allege that the boulders being installed are so weak that they crumble under slight pressure, raising doubts about the durability of the project. “If the stones break by hand during installation, how will they withstand the monsoon rains?” questioned one villager. Locals fear the entire structure could collapse within weeks, failing to serve its purpose.
The controversy deepens with accusations that a section of ruling party leaders and local influencers are indirectly backing the contractor and suppliers involved. Sources suggest that inferior boulders are being deliberately supplied in collusion with contractors to siphon off government funds.
Even some workers engaged in the project have admitted the poor quality of materials, though they continue the work citing “instructions from above.”
Residents are demanding immediate suspension of the ongoing work and a neutral investigation to identify those responsible. “Crores of rupees are being spent in the name of development, but if the project collapses at the very start, whose pockets are being filled?” asked a local resident.
The people of Champlai Naya Bari have united in their demand: stop the substandard work, conduct a fair probe, and ensure accountability. Without strict action, they fear this project will join the long list of so-called “paper development” schemes that end up buried under corruption.
