Agartala, 28th January 2026: In a joint operation, the Child Rights Protection Commission and the West District Labour Department on Tuesday conducted raids at several locations in Agartala to curb the practice of child labour. The drives were carried out at shops along Lakshminarayan Bari Road, GB Market and Surya Chowmuhani following allegations of children being engaged as labourers.
During the raids, three children were rescued from the GB Market area. Department sources said the rescued children were immediately shifted to a safe location, and steps are being taken to ensure their protection, counselling and rehabilitation in accordance with established procedures. One more individual was also rescued during operations conducted at other locations.
Officials said the action forms part of a nationwide child labour rescue drive that began on January 26 and will continue until March 31. The special operation in Tripura is being conducted in phases, with coordinated inspections planned across urban and rural areas of the state.
According to administrative sources, the six-day intensive phase of the drive involves simultaneous identification and rescue of children employed in shops, commercial establishments and other workplaces where child labour is reportedly prevalent. The operation is being carried out with the involvement of multiple departments to ensure effective enforcement of child protection and labour laws.
Authorities have reiterated that strict legal action will be initiated against employers and others found violating child labour provisions. Emphasising that children’s education and future security remain a top priority, officials said there would be no compromise in enforcing the law and ensuring that rescued children are brought back into the mainstream through rehabilitation and schooling.
