Agartala, 29th January 2026: The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated steps to address the issue of stray dogs in the city by following the directives of the Supreme Court of India, with a focus on both public safety and animal welfare.
Mayor Dipak Majumder said that the Supreme Court, along with the Animal Welfare Board of India under the Government of India, has laid down clear guidelines for the humane management of street dogs. As per these directions, Urban Local Bodies have been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring proper care and welfare of stray animals in urban areas.
He stated that AMC’s proposed plan includes relocating street dogs to shelter homes, organising regular awareness and sensitisation programmes, ensuring vaccination, implementing behaviour management practices, and carrying out animal birth control measures. Awareness campaigns will also be conducted in every ward to educate citizens on coexisting peacefully with street dogs.
Emphasising animal welfare, the Mayor said that harassment of street dogs will not be tolerated and that measures will be taken to prevent any food shortages for them.
“One of our key priorities is the construction of a dedicated shelter home for street dogs. A meeting has already been held to discuss the required steps for this initiative,” Majumder said.
According to a recent survey conducted by the AMC, more than 1,200 stray dogs are currently living on roads and in various parts of Agartala city. The Mayor acknowledged that incidents of dog bites have occasionally been reported, leading to concerns over public safety.
“A detailed discussion was held on adopting a balanced and humane approach that safeguards citizens while ensuring the well-being of the animals,” he added.
The Mayor assured that the Agartala Municipal Corporation will work closely with concerned authorities to effectively implement the Supreme Court’s guidelines on stray dog management.
