Agartala, 13th March 2026: Tension gripped Kailashahar subdivision after the death of a 65-year-old man in police custody late last night. The incident, which occurred in Deorachhara area, has triggered widespread anger among locals, with the family alleging custodial assault.
Reportedly, the deceased identified as Monir Mia, a daily wage laborer from Ward No. 3 of Deorachhara ADC village under Gournagar block, was arrested around 2 a.m. on Thursday night. Police acted on a non-bailable warrant issued by the court following allegations that Mia had failed to provide maintenance to his estranged wife after divorce.
Family members claim that several policemen, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, behaved abusively during the arrest. They allege Mia was forced to walk out of his home and was beaten inside the police vehicle. Around 3 a.m., the family received a call from Kailashahar police station informing them that Mia had fallen ill and was taken to Unakoti District Hospital.
Hospital sources confirmed that Mia was admitted at 3:15 a.m. and died at 4:40 a.m. Despite efforts, doctors could not save him.
News of his death quickly spread, drawing large crowds from Deorachhara to the hospital premises. The situation grew tense, prompting deployment of additional police and TSR forces under the supervision of Kailashahar police station officer-in-charge Tapas Malakar.
When approached for comment, Malakar said he could not speak on the matter without clearance from higher authorities. Meanwhile, Mia’s family has lodged a written complaint with the Superintendent of Police, accusing Kailashahar police of custodial torture leading to his death.
Police sources stated that the body would be handed over to the family after post-mortem examination. The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the area, with residents demanding accountability and justice.
