Agartala, 19th March 2026: Two members of the Tripura Legislative Assembly have formally urged the Chief Minister to make a statement on the floor of the House regarding the latest status of the investigation into the murder of Angel Chakma, a student from Tripura whose death in Uttarakhand sparked outrage.
In a letter dated March 19, MLAs Santana Chakma and Sambhu Lal Chakma highlighted the gravity of the incident and sought clarity on the progress of the probe. The letter was addressed to the Chief Minister at Agartala.
The legislators referred to the killing of Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student in Dehradun, describing it as a “brutal” and “racially motivated” crime that shocked the nation. They noted that Chakma was allegedly attacked by a mob in December 2025 in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun, following a confrontation involving caste-based slurs. He succumbed to his injuries after battling for life for several days in hospital.
Quoting his reported last words — “I am not Chinese… I am an Indian” — the MLAs termed the incident a disturbing example of racial hatred and violence against people from the Northeast.
According to the letter, five accused persons have been arrested in connection with the case. Of them, three have been remanded to custody, two minors sent to a juvenile home, and one suspect remains absconding. Police action has reportedly been based on CCTV evidence, and the legal process is currently underway.
The MLAs have urged the Chief Minister to present the latest updates of the investigation in the Assembly, emphasizing the need for transparency and justice in the case.
They stated that such an incident calls for a strong response against racism and demanded that the government keep the House informed about developments in the investigation and trial.
