Agartala, 21st March 2026: Anganwadi workers and helpers from across the state gathered at Swami Vivekananda Maidan to march to the Circuit House here for pressing their long-standing demands. However, police stopped them near the ground due to lack of prior permission.
The protesters alleged that no allocation was made for them in this year’s budget and said they have not received benefits despite several Supreme Court rulings in their favour. They highlighted that their monthly salary, ranging from Rs 4,000 to Rs 8,000, is insufficient amid rising living costs. They demanded job regularisation, equal pay, gratuity, and basic benefits. Workers also spoke about heavy workloads, irregular hours, and lack of recognition.
They noted that since 2018, only one protest was held earlier at Khowai Chowmuhani. After that, an additional Rs 1,500 was granted, but only to those appointed after 2017 under Anganwadi ICDS, leaving older workers without any benefit.
Although the leaders insisted on the presence of Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy to hear their demands, officials from the department assured them the matter would be addressed, after which the gathering dispersed.
