Digital systems pose challenges for the elderly people

Agartala, 23rd March 2026:   In today’s Digital India, Aadhaar-based services have become an essential part of daily life. From collecting ration supplies to accessing banking facilities, pensions, or completing KYC requirements, biometric verification is now mandatory. But this technology-driven system has emerged as a major hurdle for senior citizens.

As people age, their fingerprints often fade or become unclear, making it difficult for scanners to verify their identity. As a result, many elderly individuals are unable to collect ration from fair-price shops or face repeated obstacles while availing banking services. In search of solutions, some visit Aadhaar update centers to re-register their biometric data. Yet, due to age-related changes, their fingerprints are often too faint to be recorded again, leaving them frustrated and helpless.

Experts suggest that iris scan technology could be a more effective alternative, since the structure of the eye remains largely unchanged with age. However, most ration shops and banks have yet to introduce this facility. Despite the availability of such technology, citizens remain deprived of its benefits.

This situation has sparked growing resentment among the elderly. They demand that where Aadhaar verification is mandatory, iris scans or other alternative methods should be implemented without delay. Additionally, there is a call for more humane and simplified verification processes tailored to the needs of senior citizens.

As India advances digitally, it is crucial to ensure inclusivity so that no one—especially the elderly—is left behind. The need of the hour is to make digital systems more accessible, ensuring equal service delivery for all citizens.
