Agartala, 26th March 2026: Tripura is all set to witness two consecutive kidney transplant surgeries on March 30 and 31 at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital. These procedures will be carried out under the guidance of leading kidney transplant specialists.
The Tripura Health Department credited this achievement to the efforts of Chief Minister Professor (Dr) Manik Saha, who has been working to make kidney transplantation services more accessible to patients within the state. Over the past two years, residents suffering from kidney ailments in Tripura have gained the opportunity to receive these life-saving treatments locally.
According to the report, a total of five successful kidney transplants have already been performed in the region. These include procedures conducted at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital in Tripura, as well as at Shija Hospital and Research Institute in Manipur. The state marked its first kidney transplant on July 8, 2024, while the fifth successful procedure took place on November 4, 2025.
The upcoming surgeries involve two patients aged 33 and 36. A team of kidney transplant specialists from Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital, in collaboration with experts from Shija Hospital and Research Institute in Manipur, will oversee the procedures.
Currently, both donors and recipients are undergoing pre-transplant evaluations at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital. The final decision to proceed will be made following approval from the relevant authorization committee. As part of the protocol, careful matching of the donor and recipient kidneys will be conducted to maximize the chances of a successful transplant.
