Agartala, 1st April 2026:   Unakoti district police have stepped up operations to curb cattle smuggling in Kailashahar subdivision, recovering five cows in two separate incidents over the past week. While suspects managed to flee under cover of darkness and adverse weather, authorities say investigations are underway to dismantle the smuggling network.

At a press briefing held at Irani Police Station, District Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R (IPS) outlined recent actions.

On March 30, police patrols rushed to Hamidpur after reports of a vehicle accident. Officers discovered two cows inside the vehicle, but three suspects escaped upon noticing police presence. The vehicle was seized and an FIR lodged at Irani Police Station.

The following day, March 31, police chased a suspicious vehicle in Latiapura. Heavy rain and slippery roads caused the vehicle to crash, leading to the recovery of three cows. Two suspects fled the scene, but the cattle were rescued and the vehicle confiscated.

Superintendent Sudhambika noted that preliminary investigations suggest both incidents are linked to the same smuggling ring. “We have intensified patrols and surveillance. Strong efforts are underway to identify and arrest the absconding accused. We are confident they will be brought to justice soon,” she said.

Local residents have expressed concern over rising smuggling attempts, but officials believe swift police action has prevented larger crimes. Authorities confirmed that operations will continue with greater force to stamp out illegal activities in the region.
