Agartala, 25th April 2026: Residents living along the banks of the Abhoynagar Katakhal have raised strong objections after receiving eviction notices from the Sadar subdivision administration. The canal, earmarked for renovation under the Smart City project, is set to undergo major development works initiated by the Agartala Municipal Corporation.
Families residing in the area said they were served notices twice, followed by public announcements urging them to vacate their homes. Many of them, dependent on microfinance loans to educate their children and working as domestic helpers to sustain their households, expressed concern that no alternative arrangements had been offered. “Where will we go if they evict us without rehabilitation?” one resident asked.
This evening, the CPI(M) Abhoynagar local committee staged a protest march against the eviction drive. Party leader Amal Chakraborty accused the BJP-led coalition government of waging “a war against the people of the state,” claiming it has failed to provide livelihoods while simultaneously displacing citizens. He alleged that the government is using bulldozers to remove hawkers and uproot families without compensation.
Observers note that the timing of the eviction orders, coming ahead of the ADC elections, has given opposition parties an opportunity to mobilize public sentiment, turning the issue into a political flashpoint.
