Agartala, 28th April 2026: A richly illustrated monograph titled “Traditional and Heritage Sites of Rural Tripura” was unveiled at Vigyan Bhavan on National Panchayati Raj Day. The publication, prepared under the Ministry of Panchayati Raj in collaboration with Tripura’s Department of Rural Development (Panchayat), documents the state’s diverse cultural, architectural, and natural heritage.
Compiled at the panchayat level, the monograph highlights historic structures, heritage sites, and scenic locations across Tripura, reflecting the state’s rich traditions and natural beauty. The initiative aligns with the Ministry’s Panchayati Dharohar programme, which empowers local self-governments to play an active role in heritage preservation and promotion. Cultural activities are among the 29 subjects entrusted to panchayats under the Constitution, making this effort a significant step in strengthening grassroots participation in heritage conservation. The publication will also contribute valuable content to the Ministry of Culture’s Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar portal.
In Tripura, the project has gained momentum under the leadership of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha and Panchayat Minister Kishore Barman, who have emphasized rural eco-tourism as a strategic priority. Their vision positions heritage as a driver of sustainable tourism, livelihood generation, and local economic growth. The monograph is expected to serve as a catalyst for showcasing lesser-known tourist destinations and strengthening eco-tourism management in rural areas.
Copies of the publication will be widely distributed among panchayats, libraries, and training institutions, serving as a key resource for capacity-building programmes aimed at leveraging local heritage for inclusive development.
At the same event, two other monographs were released under the Panchayati Dharohar initiative: “Rural Heritage of Tirupati” and “Uttarkashi: The Soul of Himalayan Heritage.” These efforts are closely aligned with the Prime Minister’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and the nine Jan Sankalps, including Desh Darshan and Vocal for Local. The initiatives emphasize public participation, sustainable development, and the promotion of indigenous heritage and local economies.
