Agartala, 28th April 2026: Khowai district has been battered by a powerful storm and relentless rainfall since early this morning, leaving daily life in disarray. The destructive Nor’wester has caused widespread damage across the subdivision, with reports of homes and crops suffering significant losses. While official figures are yet to be released, local authorities and residents fear extensive destruction.
Electricity supply has been severely disrupted for the past four to five days, and today’s storm has further deepened concerns about when services will return to normal. Meanwhile, heavy downpours have submerged key roads and alleys across Khowai town. The main road in front of Khowai Government Higher Secondary School is completely waterlogged, causing severe hardship for students and pedestrians. Narrow lanes in the town’s core areas have turned into small ponds, with residents blaming inadequate and faulty drainage systems. Despite routine drain cleaning by the municipal council, the slow pace of new construction has worsened the flooding problem.
According to the Meteorological Department, a “Very Severe Thunderstorm” warning has been issued for Khowai, Dhalai, Gomati, Sepahijala, and West Tripura districts. The alert remains in effect until 11:51 AM today, with wind speeds expected to reach 60–70 km/h, possibly peaking at 80 km/h. Strong lightning strikes and moderate to heavy rainfall are likely to continue.
District authorities have urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary and to disconnect electrical appliances as a precaution. Subdivision officials and disaster response teams are on high alert to tackle the situation.
