Agartala, 7th May 2026: A shocking case of domestic abuse has emerged from Kanchanmala Muslim Para, Ward No. 1 under Amtali Police Station, where a mother was forced to seek police intervention to save herself from her younger son’s violent behavior.
Local sources informed that Swapan Sarkar of the area passed away in 2012. Since then, his widow, Amita Sarkar, struggled to raise two sons and a daughter by working in households. After marrying off her daughter and elder son, Amita’s family life appeared stable. However, in recent times, her younger son, Karnajit Sarkar, allegedly began subjecting her to severe physical and mental abuse.
Reports state that Karnajit, often returning home intoxicated, attempted to evict his mother from the house and assaulted both her and his sister-in-law with sticks. He also hurled abusive language and issued death threats. Despite enduring this ordeal for a long time, Amita Sarkar finally broke her silence after another violent attack late Wednesday night.
On Thursday afternoon, Amita Sarkar, accompanied by her daughter-in-law, lodged a formal complaint against Karnajit at Amtali Police Station. Speaking to the media, the daughter-in-law expressed her anguish, stating that a son who fails to respect his mother and elder brother cannot be expected to safeguard anyone’s dignity.
Police have assured the family that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and appropriate legal action will be taken against the accused. This incident highlights the growing concern of domestic violence within families and highlights the urgent need for stronger legal protection and social awareness to safeguard vulnerable individuals
